Heavy rain – “how far are you prepared to go for love?”

After waiting for months, I’ve finally had time to play the highly acclaimed Heavy Rain by Quantic Dream. By now, most of you might have read about or even completed this game. To quote Eurogamer.net, Heavy Rain is indeed “unlike anything else you will play this year”. As a player, I was quickly absorbed into the plot within a few minutes. Against the backdrop of a rainy weekend,  the thrill and suspense of this game is greatly enhanced (try playing Heavy Rain on an actual rainy evening or night with lights off and you will get what I mean). The game itself is rather short and I’ve completed it within 2 days. But this is no complain. Comparing this game with a 2 hour movie, the plot of the game is definitely thicker and more engaging.

The Story (Spoiler-free)

The story opens up in a light and warm-hearted tone. You control one of the main protaganist, Ethan Mars who just woke up to a bright new day and was preparing for his son’s birthday party. The player get to have some happy family time when controlling Ethan, drawing them closer to the character in the process. Later in the game, Ethan and his family visited a crowded mall where he will lose his son, resulting in a tragic car accident.

After this prologue, the story is fast-forward to 2011, two years after the accident. Ethan had lost his older son, Jason Mars, in that accident. He is divorced with his wife and he suffers traumatic pyschological depression. The setting of the game changed instantly to a gloomy and depressing mood overcast by the dark and rainy weather. Ethan soon lost his second son, Shaun, at a park to the Origami Killer.

The Origami Killer is a serial killer who kidnapped young boys and killed them by drowning them in rainwater. The victims would then be found with an orchid and an origami on him. The player would get to know more about the killer when they get to control Norma Jayden, a FBI who is sent to assist the police on this case.

On the sideline, a third playable character, private investigator Scott Shelby, attempts to collect clues and evidences from parents of the victims killed by the Origami Killer. He visits each of them and gather more and more evidences as he progress.

Finally, the player also gets to play the lovely Madison Paige, a female photojournalist who helped Ethan throughout the ordeal.

The story ended with a twist as the identity of the Origami Killer is known. All in all, there is about seven alternate endings depending on the choices taken by the player throughout the game.

The Gameplay

In Heavy Rain, player follows the on-screen 3D icon to determine which button to press at each specify stage of movement. Although it may seems like a mundane process (sometime you need to do day-to-day simple task like cooking an egg, bathing etc.), the action sequences are exciting as every button you pressed can assist the character in evading an attack or striking on the assailant successfully.

And yes, your character may die if you fail some of the fighting sequence making it even more thrilling and immersive. The six axis controller is also utilized fully in this game.

You get to move your controller in almost all of the available six axis. From simple task of shaking a carton of orange juice to steering a car. Although the Move Version may provide a more creative way of controlling the players, I feel that the six axis controller by itself has provided a basic yet effective way of engaging the player.

At anytime of the game, the player can delve into the minds of the characters by pressing L2. You can then hear what the character is thinking  about at that point of time. Sometimes, the character will have contradictory thoughts that illustrate the internal self-struggle that he or she is experiencing.

When playing as the FBI agent, you get to use a futurist ARI (Added Reality Interface) system. The system which consists of a pair of glasses and glove, display holographic representation of evidences and files. Get ready for some matrix-style high-tech fun with this device in the game.

The Graphics and behind the scenes

Running at 720 resolution instead of the Full HD 1080 (as featured in Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII), the graphic is still overall amazing. The physics of the sets are realistic and the realism of real-time rendered cut-scenes are commendable as well. The degree of facial expression seen in this game put many games at shame (especially compared with the recent CSI game that I’ve played). Other than a few glitches, (at one point of time, my Scott Shelby head is turned 180 degree for a second or two), the game level of realism pushes the boundaryof game graphic even further and gamers may now be even more demanding in terms of graphics quality.

Casting of the characters are based on real-life actors and actresses. For example, Madison Paige is actually created from scans of English Model Jacqui Ainsley who also does the mo-cap for Madison. In fact, almost all of the sequences are created using motion capturing. Facial expressions are also that of the actors’ and actresses’. The techniques used are similar to that of Avatar but Avatar captured both facial expression and movement simultaneously in a single shot unlike Heavy Rain.

Scott Shelby is modelled based on actor Sam Douglas. You can see a real-life ‘Scott Shelby’ in the video below 🙂

The creators of the game are very merticulous about the sets. Most of the sets are very elaborate and details much to my surprise.

In a scene of a small convenience store for example, all the racks are filled with real models of daily items. The lazy way of doing the racks of items is to apply a single textured images onto a shelf (as seen in older games such as Counter-strike).

In a mall scene, Ethan has to fight his way through a crowd to find his son Jason. Despite the large number of people in the mall, the gameplay was smooth and not jerky. For those who may not know this, games usually ‘lags’ when a scene consists of large number of objects. This is because, the graphic processors has to compute and draw each of these individual objects to the screen. Therefore, with more objects, the heavier the computation will become. This is also the reason why your computer will lag when playing RTS such as StarCraft II after building many units.

Lighting of the game is also very well-done. Note that rendering of all the scene has to be done in real time when the player is controlling the characters. That is to say that all computations of the 3D scenes have to be done in real-time. Effects such as shadow are not entirely impressive given that such real-time shadow generation is already seen in games such as Final Fantasy XIII and Assassin’s Creed. However, other effects such as reflection (be it off a mirror or reflective surface) will simply blow off your mind. To illustrate the level of difficulty in achieving real-time generation of 3D scene, a single Toy Story 3 frame (generally a film has 30 frame per seconds) took 7 hours to completely render. Now imagine Heavy Rain need to do all these in a fraction of a second. Given the result, I am very impressed by the quality of the graphics.

Soundtrack

What is a good game without good soundtrack? The cinematic soundtracks in the game bring out the various emotion that the director wants the user to experience, greatly enhancing the gameplay. One moment, your heart sinks with the despondent orchestral music, the next moment, it will beat faster as the music turned fast-paced and thrilling. A cinematic experience is how I would describe the soundtracks accompanying the game.

Conclusion

All in all, Heavy Rain is a must-play title for all PS3 owners in our opinion. A game with captivating plot and innovative gameplay presented in excellent graphic is how we would like to described this game. While no sequel is currently planned, I certainly do hope that Quantic Dream can come out with a new interactive drama title that does not build on the current Heavy Rain universe. I do agree that a sequel to Heavy Rain would undermine the game current status quo as a sequel would have problem delivering a newer refreshing idea compared to Heavy Rain. It is afterall, the innovative and new idea of the game that make it successful. Some critics said that Heavy Rain is more of a movie than game, but which successful game of today do not have a captivating storyline? Games in the past like Super Mario and Pacman can be successful without a thick plot. But gamers of today prefer such feature and it is almost seen in any modern games today. Movie or game? You decide. For me, it is not important. What matters is that I have thoroughly enjoyed the game.

Hurray for the good plot and graphics

Microsoft Kinect, Is it worth it?

Recently, I have been wanting to purchase a new console.  I already have a PS3, so what I am comparing is basically the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox. Before I knew that Kinect was coming out, I was actually bent on Wii. I even have the picture of a Wii on my dreamchart. My estimated buying period would be around Feb 2011 and now the problem arises – Wii or Kinect?

Review of Kinect bby TechFast

I believe most people would choose Kinect on instinct. It has more potential, games could be more fun and seems to overwhelm Wii in almost every way. However, Kinect has just came out in the market. So the games for it could be quite limited, and it would seem that way for quite some time. The majority of the games resemble Wii in many ways, like MotionSports, Your Shape Fitness Evolved and Brunswick Pro Bowling. Basically it is the Nintendo Wii being released all over again, just that now it seems cooler and is cooler.

Personally I am quite a hardcore platform gamer, and the games that are released for Kinect currently does not attract me at all. If I were indeed looking for a platform for me to play games with my family, I would choose Wii over Kinect. Wii allows up to four players, while Kinect looks like it only has the capability of supporting two right now. Furthermore Wii is much cheaper than a Kinect set now, assuming that you do not have a Kinect Ready Xbox 360 at home. If you are a casual gamer wanting to spend more time with your family through a console, you would probably not want to spend SGD$400 more on a console that you would not make full use of.

Even as a serious gamer, Wii catches my attention despite its similarity to Kinect. Games like Call of Duty and GoldenEye 007 really have a different feel when you play it with motion sensor controllers, while Monster Hunter Tri is really enjoyable if you had played the Playstation Portable versions. Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime 3 come to mind too, along with Tatsunoko vs Capcom. On top of all these there exist the family-friendly Wii games, making the Nintendo Wii a console that satisfy almost everyone.

However, assuming that you do not already have a Kinect Ready Xbox 360 at home, spending the extra SGD$400 might be worth it. That is because you not only have a Kinect, you have a Xbox 360 too. You get to play games that PS3 doesnt have, like the Halo series as well as the Gears of War series. Furthermore I have a PS3 Slim edition, meaning that I cannot play PS2 games. For older games that are PS2 only, they tend to be on Xbox 360 too. So getting the Kinect Ready Xbox 360 is equivalent to getting a newly-born Wii, PS2 and Xbox 360 together.

With all these said, I certainly am not trying to undermine the ability of Kinect to grow. Honestly speaking, its potential is frightening. Imagine Marvel vs Capcom and Tekken on Kinect. Or the next Call of Duty series. A new Mirror Edge, anybody? One wonders how far the Kinect would bring us, but all these takes time, and it would be an estimate of 1-2 years at least. Till then, I think I would decide on Wii for now.

EDITOR’S NOTE

To placate all you PS fans out there, PS Move is defintely a strong contender against Wii. The higher accuracy of PS Move over Wii had won some developer over. For example, Harmonix, creator of the new Dance Central for Kinect, is considering porting the game over to PS Move but not Wii due to the lack of tracking data provided by Wii’s system. Finally, the motion controller battle has begin with now all three major gaming company having their own version of motion controller in the market. Who can move the gamers?

For those who think that Kinect is a new and innovative product, think again after watching the video below:

And why isn’t Sony pushing for controller-less system? This video below explains it.

Tips for using GameTrader.SG

Hi everyone! GameTrader.SG has been operational for a period of time now and we would just like to share some tips with all members (and visitors) with regarding how to effectively use GameTrader.SG. So we summed up all the tips we have for buyers, sellers and traders. Check out the tips below:)

1. Seller
i) Entering title:

We have been observing the titles that our members gave to their posts. Here are what we can share with you. Some members posted very long title and descriptive for their games, consoles or accessories. Long titles like “For Sale – Dead Rising 2 CHEAP and no scratches” make it difficult for buyers to search for your games. The title should be kept short and simple. It is unlikely that buyers who want to buy Dead rising 2 will type such a long search. Instead, put all these information in the description of the post.

In case some of you aren’t aware of this, GameTrader.SG will send out notification based on the members WTB (want to buy) should your post is relevant to them. So unless there is really really someone who want to buy “For Sale – Dead Rising 2 CHEAP and no scratches” and type this exact same title for their WTB, chances are your “For Sale – Dead Rising 2 CHEAP and no scratches” will not be matched to their WTB.

If you really really want to enter a few more words of description in the title, using brackets will be recommended as words in bracket will be disregarded by GameTrader.SG when doing matching.

ii) Providing good ways for buyers to contact

So a buyer looks up your post and is interested to buy your game but alas no contact number! Buyers usually prefer quick dealing via SMS so providing a number is a good way for quick deals. We understand that some of you may be  comprehensive about entering your personal contact number into GameTrader.SG, so we did not make it a ‘must’. You are also welcomed to put your contact number in the description. If you decided to show your contact number in  all your posts, you do not have to edit each of them individually. You can make use of the default setting overwrite feature at the ‘Post Settings’ page to overwrite all posts with your default settings. See v) below for more information.

Also, in the past, the contact numbers are display blatantly on the game post. But now, we tried to sort of ‘encode’ it a little so that at  least people can’t google up your contact number easily and crazy bots that rip handphone number off websites cannot easily detect your contact number.

In some cases, emails are not check frequently and the buyer fail to get to the seller. The next natural thing to do is either to PM them here on GameTrader.SG or post a question on the game post page. If you leave the profile default setting, you should have no problem receiving an email notification of the questions that a buyer has posted on your post, however, some email filter may place our system email as Junk. To ensure that this does not happen, put admin@gametrader.sg under your safe list as this will be the email used by the system to send out emails. Also if you disable ‘Receive email updates’ under ‘Edit Profile’, you will not receive such notification.

For PM (private messages), no email notification will be send out to you. So do log in regularly to GameTrader.SG to check for PM. Any new PM will be shown in the top bar.

iii) Updating item status

We really appreciate all sellers effort in updating the status of their posts whether it is ‘on hold’, ‘Sold’ or available. Sometime, buyers looked up a post that has already been sold and starts to email, SMS, PM, post questions to the sellers only to get a negative reply (or no reply). This will definitely frustrate the buyer and also the seller sometimes since you start to get SMS, email for items you already sold. By updating your posts as sold, your contact number or email will no longer be shown and will be hidden to protect your privacy. Well there is really no need to delete the post but you can still do it if you want to do some housekeeping for your profile page.

iv) Updating your post

At any point of time, you can easily edit your posts by either going to your profile page or the specific post page. You should revised your price periodically. In case you missed our previous blog post, check out the Seller Tips post here

v) Default post settings

Are you tired of re-filling the entire form again at the start of each new post? You can actually set the default setting for their post. Simply go to ‘Post settings’ found at the top bar and default value for attributes such as ‘negotiable’ price, ‘tradable’, ‘contact method’, ‘meet-up area’ and ‘description’ can be set at that page. Furthermore, you can overwrite the contact method, preferred meet-up area and description of ALL your posts at this page. So should you decide to show your contact number at all your posts, you do not have to edit each posts individually. Simple overwrite the old settings with the default setting under ‘Profile Settings’.

vi) Placing images

You have two options in choosing an image for your post. Either you can choose to upload your own photo or simply select an image from GameTrader.SG’s auto online image search. Posts without images will not be place under the ‘latest post’  section of the main page. Adding an image will increase the chance of your sale, especially if the image is an actual photo of the item you are posting.

2. Buyer

i) Searching for the game of your choice

To search for games, simply enter the game title into the search box.

Refrain from entering long descriptive search. For example, try not to search for “Brand new Dead Rising 2 with manual”. Instead simply enter “Dead Rising 2”. This will allow more matches for your search. Also, should your search fail to return any results, try using keywords instead. For example, instead of “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2”, you can try entering “Warfare 2”. Another example is instead of entering “Enslaved: Odyssey to the West “, enter “Enslaved”. Also, some sellers may post the game using the acronym (though not encouraged). If you can find “Pro-evolution soccer 2011”, try “PES 2011” or “PES2011”. If all else fail, you can try browsing by title. Some search may fail due to spelling errors.

To search for consoles and accessories, be sure to select “Console/ Accessories” under the filter of ‘Genre’

Various filters are available to you so you can search for games that are within your budget, tradable, with negotiable price etc. Also, you can specify the preferred meet-up area in the search. So if you prefer to meet in the east, you can use that option to show only posts where sellers prefer to meet in the east. Note that items that are sold or on hold will also be displayed right at the back. However, you can opt to show only games that are available by selecting ‘Show available items only’.

You can also sort the posts using the sort bar found at the top of the display section.

Useful sort options include sorting by price and condition (whether pre-owned or brand new).

ii) Posting Want To Buy (WTB)

At times, you may not be able to find the games that you want as there are no sellers who had posted this item. To monitor future post, you can insert a WTB. To do so, go to ‘My Profile’ > ‘My WTB’ and then click on ‘Post new WTB’. When posting WTB, please refrain again from entering descriptive title. Description should go under the ‘Preference’ field. This is to allow better matching of posts so that you will receive a notification should a relevant posts is created. For example, “Dead Rising 2 no scratch R2” will unlikely to return match with posts compared to just “Dead Rising 2”.

3. Traders

i) Filter game that are ‘tradable’

If you wish to do one-to-one trading, you can start by searching GameTrader.SG for games where the seller expressed interest in trading. Under the filter box, you should see an option whether to display posts that are tradable or not. Next, you can then look through the list for games that you are interested and contact the posters. You can also try accessing the WTB list of the poster to see whether he or she has any game that they want and you have it. This bring us to the second point on WTB.

ii) WTB for traders

At times, we observed how members go onto the post page of others and post question asking them whether they are interested in trading with their games. And most of the time, the seller is not interested. To solve this problem, the WTB is created so that each of the members will have a list of what they want to buy. Note that WTB list is fully viewable by other members. So start creating WTB so that others will know what you want to buy or trade.

iii) Post the games you want to trade away

We recommend that traders post the games they want to sell on GameTrader.SG. Instead of having to PM or post questions to ask whether the seller is willing to trade with your list of games, simply ask him to view your list of game posts. He should be able to view your game posts simply by clicking on your nick. This helps you save time from entering the whole list of games that you want to trade away again and again.

Conclusion
